Hey Guys, Welcome back to Interesting Intelligence! This is my review of the 2019 8-core 15' MacBook Pro running the i9-9980HK processor. So there's kind of 2 new features here. They have a new CPU and a new attempt at their keyboard.
Now I am not going to go into the benchmarks and all that stuff because I honestly believe that there are better things to talk about than the specs. Just for the people who are interested, very briefly, this is a very fast CPU. The performance of this machine is fair. The CPU is good. It's on an 8 core processor, but the performance is limited because this laptop is very thin.

It runs hot, the fans are not super loud, they are like standard MacBook fans. It doesn't throttle below stock speeds but its CPU doesn't turbo very much. So, you won't notice the thermal limitations of this device on a benchmark because it's just a short test. You will notice that when the runs increase, there is a drastic drop! The thermal limitations are very pronounced over time. If you take the exact same CPU on a very well laptop, you can notice a big difference but everybody doesn't need that long performance actually.
So, I am pleased that this laptop doesn't throttle to the point running below the base clock like we have seen in the previous generation of this device, but my optimism for this device kind of ends there because they didn't change the chassis. Obviously, they could have but I feel that they should have. Apple's decision to not change the chassis design is clearly motivated by profit. It's not a bad thing, they're a company trying to make money and this is how they are able to stay among the most profitable companies in the world. When they first made this design in 2016, the engineering, the tooling cost, the manufacturing cost and all of that was super expensive. The longer they can keep this design the more money they'll make. They know their customers can use a smart chassis but they are just trying to keep the chassis for as long as possible.
Ok, the other thing that they improved this year or attempted to improve is the keyboard. This is now the fifth generation of the keyboard, some people will argue that it's the fourth but it is the 5th one, I am glad they made this. It is supposedly a new material for the keyboard components, But, I can't help but feel doubtful. The typing experience remains largely the same. It is commendable that Apple provides good service in things like this. They say that it's cheaper for them to kind of keep that keyboard rather than redesigning it. This repair program will cost a lot of money as well.

So, I guess the main question is that is this laptop worth it because it's really expensive. For an ordinary person, it is worth it, you just gotta take advantage of the multi-core CPU. Keep in mind though, it has thermal limitations, the keyboard is still a bit of a gamble and the price tag is fierce.
